Juan Pablo Hernandez Gutierrez
Juan Pablo Hernandez Gutierrez is a painter living and working in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal). In his practice, Hernandez Gutierrez plays with the value of materials, images, and objects.
Untitled (crossover latino 2023), is a painting with an integrated sound system, amplifying music from a USB bought in the streets of Bogota, Colombia. So, my plan for my residency at Céline Bureau, is to assemble a sound system into a painting.
The essence of this project lies in creating an artistic object that encompasses the inherent contradictions between beauty, quality, and functionality. In their lack of definition, and therefore quality, poor objects and images share realities that inform and speculate on the experiences of people and things under techno-capitalist imperatives. I envision this object as an opportunity to halt the dizzying flow of images and sounds that pierce into our daily lives, allowing them to be presented in a static and solid format, such as that of a painting. I am looking at formalist/minimalist art principles in relationship to pop art principles. Key artists I am interested for this project are Barnett Newman, Agnes Martin, Leon Golub, Beatriz González, and Michael Krebber.
